Julia and I had a wonderful visit to Harvest Christian Academy...one of our first place winners in the Bright Green Dream contest. Pastor Ray Williams, his teachers, staff, students, and parent volunteers are doing such an amazing job. This school runs on an incredible dedication to education, community, and getting kids to embrace learning EARLY...I was put to shame by what I saw these first-graders reading and writing! Wow. Be sure to check out our pictures.
This is a beautiful old building w…

It's ridiculouse seeing all the classrooms at my school that dont have recycling bins. I once asked my math teacher in the begining of the year, " I dont need this, where is your recycling bin?" so he said, " I dont have one just throw it away."
I was suprised at this, because our school has a recycling program. So i just put it in my planner then put it in our bin when I got home. It's not that hard to just bring a bin to put in your classroom, anything will do it doesn't have to fancy. Another…

The South 8th grade students were still talking about the Lutron bus on Friday after their visit on Thursday. We showed the students the Why Dim ppt. from Lutron, and shared the features of the Balanced LC along with the energy saving graphs we had on Wednesday. The students bubbled back into class and had great conversations about what they'd seen. I can't wait until winter when we do more with electricity. I hope some other Greenovation teachers will be able to have the bus visit their school.

The story of William Kamkwamba, a 14-year-old farmer's son from an off-the-grid village in rural Africa who single-handedly built an electricity generating windmill out of a tractor fan, PVC pipe and bicycle parts, has been getting some press for a few years, but it's going mainstream now and deservedly so.
A book about William's life and his windmills, co-authored by the extraordinary young man, has just hit the shelves to tremendous reviews and seems poised to become one of the must-reads of…

Jim Novotny, a technology teacher at Livingston(NJ) High School and several of his students made an impressive presentation to the district Board of Education on September 21 about Greenovation. The presentation was added to the district website in preparation for the public meeting. Those of you both engaged and interested in Greenovation should consider reviewing the work of Jim and his students. You may access the presentation at livingston.org-go to the BOE tab and the meeting agenda for 9/2…

While reading the current edition of "School Planning and Management", I noticed several articles whose content parallel the vision and mission of Greenovation. While not specific endorsements for Greenovation, the content certainly serves to reinforce the objectives of Greenovation. I thought I would share some of my observations with you in a condensed form.
In the editor's letter, Deborah Moore discusses the impact that the learning environment has on student achievement. Ms. Moore emphatica…

About a week ago my sister, mom, and I were going school supply shopping. We were at target and noticed these folders, binders, notebooks, and other supplies that were made out of 100% recycled materials. So I bought a few. If any of you are going last minuete school shopping i would suggest those supplies because they are good for school and for the enviroment! :)

Hi All,
An acquaintance of mine, Miss Eliza Toomey, is a Middle School teacher in Annapolis, MD. She has recently become a local press favorite because of her efforts to join her Murray Hill neighbors together in a community garden for all the share and enjoy.
It's an interesting idea, that has grown and grown!

Hi Greenovators- Happy Mid-July... hope your summers are in full-swing. Just wanted to share an article I found from Time Magazine describing the debate that many communities are engaged in over clotheslines. I saw a snippet of a PBS new show this morning describing the trouble a Vermont woman was having with her neighbors because, instead of using her dryer, she hangs her clothes outside to dry. Her neighbors protest that the clothesline is against the Homeowner's Association Rules and devalues…

The beginning of the year is huge for project-based learning and the concept of a rubric. Unfortunately, some of the most detailed rubrics will fail to motivate half of the class to engage in self-motivated improvement. Alongside of the importance of building community is the importance of recognizing student school-work as 'real'. There are many ways to broach this topic:
Papercli…

As students work together to create and refine written projects, a framework of discussion points and standards is integral. If students learn these early in the year, they can examine their writing in all subjects. We glued the attached 6 trait review chart in the beginning of our writin…

So I'm reading through The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell (excellent book) when suddenly I found my own blog on the page. Apparently there is a mechanism in our brains that prevents overload by limiting our minds to a certain quantity of thoughts--here I thought it was procrastination-- cognitive capacity. This is the bottleneck that has me typing the first sentence of this blog only to erase it six and seven times over. In an effort to push beyond; I present a list:

At the National School Plant Managers Conference in Atlantic City, those of us representing Lutron Electronics had the opportunity to speak with Judy Marks from the National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Marks identified two programs that should be of interest to school administrators who are seeking financial support for new construction as well as retrofit projects.
The Department of Energy has over $6 billion in Energy Efficiency Grants for both public and…
